Best waterproof laptop cases for your peace of mind

I rarely tell people I have a waterproof laptop case because they might think I’m crazy. But, if you are here reading this, then I’m safe to admit it.

Nowadays, our lives are pretty much inside that little box, if not think about the photos you’ve taken or the work reports.  If you happen to travel often, like I do, you may face many unexpected situations where there’s a risk of damaging your laptop.

Last week, for example, my water bottle opened inside my backpack; a downpour in Asia happens all the time, and so on.

A waterproof laptop case doesn’t cost much and, in most cases, it even lends a great look. The time of unattractive waterproof materials is now gone.

We reviewed different types of cases available and selected the best options for all preferences and wallets.

What types of waterproof cases for your computer are out there

Hardshell resistant cases

When you look at these cases, they are better off in war scenarios or expeditions to the Arctic. Or, they used to, as new technology makes it possible to produce ultra-resistant cases for affordable prices.

These aren’t military-grade cases, but they provide pretty much above-average protection for almost the same cost.

Water-resistance fabric sleeves

These look like the ordinary sleeves you buy in any tech accessories store, but they are made with specific fabrics that protect your computer from water.

Some of them are just water-resistant, which means they can handle a few droplets, but are useless under a full rain shower, except if they specify they are fully waterproof .

Watersport pouches

We have used a couple of these in the past. Unfortunately, they are not as convenient to use as the other models. They work by remaining closed, which doesn’t sound practical, except for keeping your laptop dry in between uses.

These pouches have a real 100% waterproof seal, as they are designed to float on the ocean if need be.

Suitcase style

The traditional suitcase models are best suited for use in a business setting and some have had upgrades too.

The biggest advantage is that it allows loads of space to carry whatever you need for your next meeting with a client, without loosing its waterproof capabilities.

Fashionable shoulder bag

To compensate the less than attractive features of our first pick, I chose this trendy but efficient shoulder bag.

It doesn’t have the same water or shock proof capabilities but, at least, it’s something that you’ll feel happy to wear.

What to do if you accidentally drop a liquid on your computer:

    1. Turn it off

Cut off all power to the laptop by removing the battery or unplugging it. If necessary, hold down the power button until it shuts down. The big risk with a liquid spill on a laptop is that the device can short out. This happens when the liquid interacts with the circuit boards inside your computer and ruins these electronic components.

Laptop batteries are easily removed by turning the machine over and sliding a switch or panel. Each laptop is different in this respect, and note that some machines do not have removable batteries.

    2. Unplug external devices

Look around the base of the laptop. Do you have a USB drive, a mouse, or any other cords or devices plugged into any of the ports (openings) around the edge of your laptop? Remove or unplug any attached devices to prevent water damage to these and help with the drying process.

    3. Turn the laptop upside down

The best position for this is to have the laptop upside down so that it makes an upside-down V. This allows the liquid to drain away from the sensitive components inside.

    4. Use a lint free paper towel or material to wipe up excess liquid.

If it was a big spill, you may be able to speed the drying process and prevent more liquid from getting inside by wiping the outside of the laptop. Be sure to use something lint free, like a glass-specific wipe or a paper towel. This will prevent the lint fibers from clinging to the moisture.

    5. Wipe up anything sticky

If the liquid you spilled was a sugar based juice or soda, you may need more than just a towel to wipe up the liquid. Be sure to use a screen-specific cleaner or wipe. You can find these products at most drugstores or electronics stores. Using a household cleaner on your laptop can cause damage — especially to the screen.

A screen-specific cleaner like this one can help with spills.

You may need to have your laptop cleaned by a professional.

You may need to have your laptop cleaned by a professional. Do not attempt to open up the case of your laptop yourself as the parts are very sensitive and you may accidentally cause more harm than good.

    6. Allow the laptop to dry

The last step is just to let it air dry for 24-48 hours. If you need to use the computer sooner than that, you can place it in a warm space (but not in direct sunlight) or near a dehumidifier to speed up the process.

Note: DO NOT use a hair dryer or place the laptop near a radiator — the heat could cause further damage to your laptop.

    7. Dry the battery

While the laptop is drying, place the battery that you removed earlier in a container with rice. The rice will draw out the moisture from the battery.

Placing the battery in rice can draw out the moisture.
    8. After 24-48 hours, try to restart the laptop. First try it with the battery still out and the laptop connected to AC power. Watch the startup process for any noticeable glitches or changes. After that, try it with the dried-out battery inside.

A wet laptop is not the end of the world. Quick action by powering down the laptop, removing power sources and turning it into an upside down V can help to prevent serious damage to your laptop.

Conclusion

You have an option for every need, either it’s style, complete waterproof protection or for use at the office. Any of these cases should be able to give your laptop an extra protection. But, remember that better than having all the protection is to prevent risks in the first place.

Consider doing an insurance for your computer, there are other hazards that can happen to your equipment that even the most resistant case cannot protect it from.
